The Older Generation Greek Skincare Rituals That Inspired Our Formulas
Long before serums came in glass droppers and moisturisers arrived in clinical white packaging, women had everything they needed in their kitchens
My Yiayia never owned a single product with a 14-ingredient label she couldn't pronounce. What she had was olive oil, chamomile from the garden, honey from a neighbour, and a deep, unquestioned faith in what the land provided. If she had time, she cared for her skin the way her mother had, and her mother before that, quietly, practically, and with great reverence.
It is this tradition that sits at the heart of Wild Goddess Botanicals. And the more I learn about the botanical ingredients we use today, the more I'm struck by how far back this wisdom goes.
What Older Generation Greek Women Actually Used on Their Skin
Across ancient Greece & indeed in more recent times, and across the broader Mediterranean, skincare was inseparable from the rhythms of daily life. These weren't luxury treatments they were practical, accessible rituals using ingredients that grew nearby or lived in the pantry.
**Olive Oil** was the foundation of everything. Used for cleansing, moisturising and protecting the skin barrier, olive oil's rich content of oleic acid and antioxidants made it an extraordinarily effective skin treatment. Greek women applied it after bathing, used it to remove dirt, and rubbed it into their hair and nails. Modern cosmetic science has since confirmed what they already knew: olive oil is deeply nourishing for the skin, particularly for dry and mature skin types.
**Beeswax** was used to create protective salves and balms & one of the earliest recorded uses of an occlusive ingredient. By forming a protective layer over the skin, beeswax shields against environmental damage while locking moisture in. It remains one of the most effective natural skin protectants available, which is why it forms part of our Goddess Glow Face Balm to this day.
**Honey** was prized for its antimicrobial and deeply hydrating properties. Used as a face mask, it drew moisture to the skin while gently cleansing and calming irritation. Raw honey contains naturally occurring enzymes and antioxidants that support slow skin renewal, a gentle, ancient form of exfoliation.
**Chamomile** was steeped and applied to calm redness, soothe irritated skin and cleanse wounds. It remains one of the most scientifically well-documented anti-inflammatory botanicals available, used today in everything from baby skincare to sensitive skin formulas.
**Vinegar** diluted in water was used as a skin toner, balancing the skin's natural pH and tightening pores. Apple cider vinegar has experienced a revival in modern natural skincare for exactly this reason.
Why This Matters for Modern Skin
There is a tendency in modern skincare to treat age as a problem to be solved, a flaw to be corrected with increasingly complex chemistry. But the women in my family never saw it that way. Ageing was proof of a life lived. Skincare was an act of care, not correction.
The botanical ingredients that have been used for thousands of years aren't just poetic they are genuinely, measurably effective. Cold-pressed seed oils like rosehip, pomegranate and black seed are rich in essential fatty acids that support the skin's lipid barrier, the same barrier that keeps skin soft, flexible and protected as it matures. Frankincense used in ancient Mediterranean and Middle Eastern traditions for centuries has been shown to support skin elasticity and renewal.
We haven't invented anything new at Wild Goddess Botanicals. We've simply listened carefully to what women already knew.
A Ritual for Today
You don't need a Yiayia's pantry to adopt a slower approach to skincare. You just need a few minutes, a product you trust, and a willingness to treat the act of caring for your skin as something worth doing with intention.
That's what our formulas were made for.
Try warming a small amount of the Goddess Ritual Face Oil between your palms before pressing it gently into clean skin. Breathe. Notice the scent, frankincense and botanicals, earthy and warm. Let it be a moment of quiet before whatever comes next.
That's the ritual. Simple, ancient, and entirely yours.
